Research 9, the feature film
Although this film is seemingly a child-friendly animation film, there are several dark aspects. Many of the characters are presented with odd and creepy features. There are many scenes involving violent and intense actions, as well as several character deaths, with very minimal aspects of light-heartedness. The setting shows a dull place that seems to be abandoned, filled with metal scraps and muted colors. The audience can assume the film takes place during a post-apocalyptic time without humans, only these ragdoll-like characters. Instead of names, these dolls are identified by numbers. At the start of the film, the main character called “9” is exploring an abandoned city when he comes across another doll, labeled “2.” Shortly after, they are confronted by a beast who takes 2 away. This is the first time in the film the audience is shown the main antagonist, being the beast. 9 awakes in a shelter filled with other dolls like him, each also with a number on their backs. The film becomes more complex as it progresses. The characters are introduced to several different robot-like creatures and even learn about the origin of their creation. The presence of these creatures is represented by neon green light, which is shown distinctively among each creature. There are several time transitions that show the characters moving long distances in a very short period of time. This creates gaps in the plotline, as the audience is not aware of what goes on during these time jumps. There is not a strong presence of character development throughout the film. Most of the characters are shown to have very distinct characteristics, which do not change much as the story progresses. However, it is explained later that the scientists who created these dolls gave each doll generic characteristics on purpose. The sound effects are generally made up of dialogue, background music, and machine-like sounds. Generally, the music used matches the mood of the scene. The color scheme is mainly very dull and muted, apart from the neon green light. The special effects mainly come into play with the robotic/computer-like machines and creatures. Since the film was created without CGI, most of the special effects look artificially created. However, this works because the film is animated. Overall, the film is very basic, yet also creative.
