Genre Choice for Film

 After a lot of research and consideration, I decided to choose to make my film a thriller. I chose the thriller genre because it perfectly encapsulated the type of film I want to create. Thrillers create fictional plotlines, while also staying somewhat realistic. Although the idea of a horror film heavily sparked my interest, I decided that it would be very difficult to capture all of the technical elements successfully while also ensuring the plotline itself is the main focus of the film. I also liked the idea of a drama, but I decided that I still wanted to keep an eerie tone and did not want the theme of tragedy too focused. The thriller genre perfectly combines the two while also allowing a lot of creative freedom. On one hand, it induces fear, suspense, and tension within the audience, like a horror movie does. However, it also heavily focuses on the development of the plotline while keeping the technical elements to a minimum, like a drama does. I want to add a scientific-based twist into my film as well, rather than the film ending with death. I like how I can fit the genre by keeping the setting, lighting, and editing simplified, and not have to worry too much about costumes, props, and makeup. I was inspired by the show "Black Mirror," which incorporates a thriller and sci-fi, just as I would like to make my short-film. I do not think I will have to tweak my pitch, which is also an added bonus. Some things I would like to keep out of my movie that is true to the thriller genre is the consistent low lighting. I would like my film to have lighting variation, with both soft light and dark light. Some things I would like to keep from the genre is the setting, colors, and characters. The film will mostly take place at a cabin in the middle of nowhere, staying true to the general abandoned and isolated settings within thrillers. The killer in the film will be an average person, and he will be using a weapon to do the killing. I believe this would make the film more realistic than any mystical creature or something of that sort. Finally, the colors will be mostly dark and cooler tones, with only warm tones portrayed for emotional symbolism. Overall, I believe the thriller genre is perfect for the classification of my short film.

 There are several locations in which we filmed. For each new location established, we compiled several different camera shots for variation. Some were shown by drone footage, while others by our normal camera. For the first couple of scenes, we had to find a parking lot in which we could film. We decided to go to a public lot close to my house that belongs to the public beach. There, we were able to film freely and there were enough cars around to make it look believable. For safe measure, we made sure to not capture any license plates during filming. We also only took off our masks when there was nobody else in the lot due to the current pandemic.  For our short film, Emma and I created several social media accounts in order to promote our film. First, we created a new email through Gmail in order to keep our new accounts objective to our film. The email we created is deceptionthefilm@gmail.com. We then got to create these new accounts. First, we created a Facebook page. However, we were having difficulty trying to figure out how to change the name presented on the page. As a result, the page currently shows up as my name instead of the film name. We were more successful with the additional accounts. We created a Twitter account under the user "@FilmDeception." Each account had to use a different user due to the fact some names were taken on some platforms while others were not. We also created a Youtube page under "Deception the Film."  I'm Back! My name is Alexandra Kuroda, and I am a 12th grader at Fort Lauderdale High School. Two years ago, I had the pleasure of taking AICE Media Studies AS level, where I grew a love for film and the media industry.
