Genre Choice for Film

Image
After a lot of research and consideration, I decided to choose to make my film a thriller. I chose the thriller genre because it perfectly encapsulated the type of film I want to create. Thrillers create fictional plotlines, while also staying somewhat realistic. Although the idea of a horror film heavily sparked my interest, I decided that it would be very difficult to capture all of the technical elements successfully while also ensuring the plotline itself is the main focus of the film. I also liked the idea of a drama, but I decided that I still wanted to keep an eerie tone and did not want the theme of tragedy too focused. The thriller genre perfectly combines the two while also allowing a lot of creative freedom. On one hand, it induces fear, suspense, and tension within the audience, like a horror movie does. However, it also heavily focuses on the development of the plotline while keeping the technical elements to a minimum, like a drama does. I want to add a scientific-based

Genre Research - Drama

Image
The drama genre focuses on romanticism and the development of realistic characters. There are four main types of dramas: comedy, tragedy, tragicomedy, and melodrama. This gives a film director a lot of freedom and variation to implement different aspects of other genres. The main purpose of a drama is to pull at the audience's heartstrings and show a storyline with major character development. The themes within these films normally include social issues, racial or religious prejudice, heartbreak, crime, etc. This is developed through many different elements. First off, the lighting used in dramas is normally very soft and warm. This makes the film feel dreamy and ethereal. The color scheme normally ties into this as well, as warmer and brighter colors are often used. The camera angles and movements utilize a lot of close-up shots and zoom-ins. This allows the audience to get a feel for the character's raw emotion as if the audience is looking at the character's faces thems

Genre Research - Thriller

Image
The thriller genre is very much alike to horror but focuses more on developing a storyline. One unique feature of thrillers is that they also have many subgenre's overlapping them. This way, the director has more creative freedom to implement several elements from other genres while also staying true to making a thriller. The main purpose of a thriller is to create suspense, anxiety, and excitement within the viewer. This is accomplished through several elements. The music used within thrillers is normally minimalistic with a very limited variety of notes in order to build suspense. Although there is some heightened music, it is kept to a minimum. The music is used to create emotion in the audience. The lighting is usually very low to create an eerie mood, and fear, and tension. The costumes are also normally very casual, as the antagonists are normal people most of the time instead of extravagant creatures. To pair this, the makeup is also kept to a minimum. Cooler toned colors a

Genre Research - Horror

Horror: The main point of a horror film is to drive fear and terror within its audience. This is accomplished through several different elements. The setting for a horror film typically takes place in a dark or rural area, possibly abandoned or isolated. This invokes a sullen tone for the audience right off the bat and foreshadows the idea that the events taking place will not likely be happy ones. The camera movements and angles themselves are generally simple so that they will not distract from the characters and events too much. However, horror films can get away with using odd angles as well, such as a skewed angle for added effect. Sound-wise, there is much variation in what sound effects horror films could utilize. They can use minimalistic music in order to build suspense, and may also do so through complete silence. They typically also use loud sound effects to effectively create jump scares within the audience. Also, the music used during the climactic parts is typically very

Genres I want to research

Image
Due to the intended plot of my short film, there is a limited amount of genres I believe would fit the film. The three I would like to research are horror, thriller, and drama. I believe any of these three would embody the film very well. First of all, I'd like to research the horror drama. Horror intrigues me because it seemingly has a very large range of what could fit into a film of its kind. Some horror films entail very generic horror factors, such as jump scares, clowns, etc. In these types of films, the horror is developed through its characters and key scenes rather than the plot itself. On the other end of the spectrum, horror movies may also lack these factors and be defined by the plot itself along with the themes developed. I believe this genre would be worthy of research because my film will be dealing with quite an eerie plotline, but this genre also gives me room to include key horrific characters and scares. Next, I would also be interested in researching the thril

Research 9, the feature film

Image
Although this film is seemingly a child-friendly animation film, there are several dark aspects. Many of the characters are presented with odd and creepy features. There are many scenes involving violent and intense actions, as well as several character deaths, with very minimal aspects of light-heartedness. The setting shows a dull place that seems to be abandoned, filled with metal scraps and muted colors. The audience can assume the film takes place during a post-apocalyptic time without humans, only these ragdoll-like characters. Instead of names, these dolls are identified by numbers. At the start of the film, the main character called “9” is exploring an abandoned city when he comes across another doll, labeled “2.” Shortly after, they are confronted by a beast who takes 2 away. This is the first time in the film the audience is shown the main antagonist, being the beast. 9 awakes in a shelter filled with other dolls like him, each also with a number on their backs. The film be

Research 9, the short

Image
At the start of the short film, the director implements a flashback by zooming into the character’s eye when he finds an object that brings back a memory. This introduces a stylistic aspect and also forms symbolism. The lighting seems dark and very dull. Also, the colors used are warm and seem to have muted tones. The sound effects are very minimalistic as well with no actual talking. The character is shown with a “9” on his back which, when observing the title, allows the audience to assume he is the main character. After the flashback, the audience can tell that the object found reminds 9 of a time his friend was killed. During the flashback, the setting seems very dull and run-down, almost like a factory or junkyard of sorts. After the flashback, the setting now shows the same place, just seemingly barren and abandoned. The green light given off by the object is a neon green, which contrasts the rest of the muted color scheme. The character is then seen running off as the same mon
