Critical Reflection

 Critical Reflection Questions

  1. How do your products represent social groups or issues?

    1. Our film, “Deception” lays into the ideas of complicity in our society. We all seem to just go along with everything around us without challenging anything. In our film, Alex and I wanted to make the audience step back, and think about how they are living their lives. Are they just playing into the illusion of control like our main character, Elle, or are they breaking boundaries and trying to go the extra step to living a unique life. At the end of our film, it is shown that Elle’s whole life was just a simulation being run by scientists, which is how Alex and I feel people are going about their lives now.

  2. How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

    1. All of our methods of promotion, such as the website, social media, flyers, and poster all come together to capture and deliver the overall mood of the short film. Deception is a mysterious movie with a twist at the end, so we wanted our audience to see all of our production work and think, “Oh, I need to watch that.” Our branding of the film starts with the name. Deception is not a word that is light, it means betrayal, lies, dishonesty. When a film is named something like this, it intrigues the audience to be eager to watch. We also attempted to use dark and dull colors in our branding campaign, to create a sense of uniform between all the platforms.

  3. How do your products engage with the audience?

    1. Our film engages the audience through a variety of factors. We made sure to add a variety of different camera shots and angles to never keep the audience bored with looking at the same thing. With this complexity of the scenes, we keep the audience constantly fixated on the film. We also scripted the movie to have an intense dialogue between the characters. Elle is almost always on edge or irritated with her surroundings and the people around her. It makes the audience get the feeling that something was off about her reality. Her complicity to the odd surroundings around also makes the audience question what is going on, and why she isn’t taking more precautions.

  4. How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?

    1. When researching the genre of our movie, thriller, we followed and challenged some of the normal conventions. Thrillers are mysterious and suspenseful, which our film definitely is. Though our film has less pure action than some other thrillers would, we definitely add in the psychological thrill some thrillers don’t have. Also, our character doesn’t react as someone in a normal thriller would. She seems unfazed by everything going around her and acts as if she could beat all odds. Even when she thought she was going crazy, she still goes on with life keeping to herself.
